Windows Live OneCare helps protect your computer, and its automated
optimization features keep your PC running at its speediest. OneCare even
regularly backs up your important files. You get all this in one convenient
package:
- Protection Plus, with its antivirus and antispyware scanners and managed,
two-way firewall, helps protect your computer from viruses, worms, Trojan
horses, hackers, and other threats. It runs continuously in the background,
but you can scan individual files and folders for viruses on demand simply
by right-clicking them. You can even scan attachments you receive via
Windows Live Messenger or MSN Messenger.
- Performance Plus regularly defragments your hard disk, removes any
unnecessary files that can clog your PC, and helps make sure important
security updates from Microsoft are installed efficiently and on time.
- Backup and Restore regularly copies your important files and settings to
CD, DVD, or external hard disk.
- Instant Support provides online help anytime you need it, 24 hours a day,
7 days a week.
Easy to Use
Windows Live OneCare constantly thinks about your computer's safety and
maintenance--so you don't have to. OneCare communicates the status of your PC's
health in the notification area of your Windows taskbar:
- A green icon means your status is Good. Protection Plus features like
antivirus and firewall are up to date, your computer is not due for a
tune-up or a backup, and there are no actions to take requiring your
attention. Windows Live OneCare is running in the background, monitoring
your system to prevent threats like viruses or spyware.
- A yellow icon means your status is Fair. Usually this means you have an
action to take, such as scheduling or running a tune-up or backup, or
downloading a non-critical update. A yellow icon means there is no immediate
threat to your system, but you should take care of the action as soon as you
can to return your system to green.
- A red icon means that your computer is At Risk. This can happen if, for
example, Windows Live OneCare is unable to update Protection Plus with the
latest virus definitions because of a lost Internet connection, or if the
Windows Live OneCare Firewall is turned off.
Always On and Automated
Windows Live OneCare works continuously, automatically, and quietly in the
background on your PC, ever vigilant against threats but never in the way,
allowing you to have fun and be more productive:
- Performance Plus is just like taking your car in for regular servicing,
but with Windows Live OneCare, the service is automatic. During the tune-up,
OneCare performs routine maintenance such as defragmenting your hard disk
and cleaning out obsolete files to help improve your computer's performance.
- Backup and Restore makes it easy to protect your important files. You can
back them up to the location of your choice: external hard disk, CDs, or
DVDs. No matter which type of backup you choose, Windows Live OneCare
reminds you when your files need backing up and can even back up your files
automatically if you use an external hard disk drive.
- Windows Live OneCare updates itself automatically to counteract new
viruses and other threats and works with Microsoft Update to help ensure
that your computer is up to date with the latest critical security updates
from Microsoft.
Evolves to Meet Your Needs
Windows Live OneCare provides continuous feature updates to subscribers,
providing you with the latest technologies to help protect you from emerging
threats. No more worrying about different versions of your antivirus software.
With Windows Live OneCare, you get automatic updates and service enhancements
the moment they're released.
Installation requirements for Windows Live OneCare
To ensure that your Windows Live OneCare installation runs smoothly, please
review the following information:
Step 1. Make sure your computer meets the system requirements for Windows Live
OneCare
Check your computer for the following minimum requirements for successful
installation. If you are unsure how to find this information, you can start the
installation process and Windows Live OneCare will check your system
automatically during setup. To install Windows Live OneCare, your computer must
be connected to the Internet.
- Microsoft Windows XP (Home Edition, Professional, Media Center Edition, or
Tablet PC Edition) with Service Pack 2 (SP2) or Windows Vista (Home Basic,
Home Premium, Business, or Ultimate)
- Windows Internet Explorer 6 or 7 for Windows XP SP2 or higher
- PC with 300 MHz or faster CPU speed
- 256 MB of RAM and 600 MB of available hard disk space
- 56 kbps or faster Internet connection (broadband recommended)
- CD or DVD burner, external hard drive, or USB-enabled media or storage
device required for backup and restore functionality (but not required for
installing Windows Live OneCare)
Step 2. Uninstall other antivirus and firewall programs
This step is very important no matter what brand of protection software you use,
because installing one antivirus or firewall program over another on the same
computer could potentially lock up the computer.
Windows Live OneCare might not run, or it might slow the performance of your
computer, if you install it when other antivirus or firewall programs are also
installed on your computer. During setup, Windows Live OneCare checks for common
antivirus and firewall programs that are known to conflict with Windows Live
OneCare and provides means for you to uninstall them.
Antivirus and firewall programs known to conflict with Windows Live OneCare:
- Symantec Norton Internet Security 2005
- Symantec Norton Antivirus 2005
- Symantec Norton SystemWorks 2005
- McAfee Internet Security Suite 2005
- McAfee VirusScan 8.0/2004
- Trend Micro PC-cillin Internet Security 2005
If no programs are listed, or if only Windows Firewall is listed, then you
probably do not need to uninstall any programs. If you do find that other
antivirus or firewall software is present on your machine, you will need to
uninstall it before installing Windows Live OneCare.
During setup, Windows Live OneCare checks for the programs listed above and will
notify you to uninstall any that are found. To avoid any potential problems,
however, Windows Live OneCare recommends that you uninstall any other antivirus
and firewall software (except for Windows Firewall, which is part of the Windows
XP operating system and cannot be uninstalled) before beginning Windows Live
OneCare installation.
Notes:
- To avoid putting your computer at risk, do not remove pre-existing
antivirus or firewall software until you are ready to install Windows Live
OneCare.
- You do not need to uninstall Windows Firewall, which is a component of the
Windows operating system and cannot be removed. It does not conflict with
Windows Live OneCare; in fact, Windows Firewall provides basic firewall
protection while you are removing the old software and installing Windows
Live OneCare.
Step 3. Make sure you are logged in as an Administrator on your computer
You need to have a user account with administrative privileges on your computer
in order to install programs like Windows Live OneCare. To give yourself
administrative privileges, you can either log on to the computer with the
username "Administrator" (and its password), or use another account
that you know has Administrator permissions.
To find out which permissions your user account has:
- Click Start on the Windows taskbar, then click Control
Panel.
- Double-click User Accounts. The listings in the Group
category will tell you what kind of permissions your current account has.
To learn more about managing Windows user permission levels, click Start
on the Windows taskbar, then click Help and Support.
