Unique Civilizations
Command the forces of three civilizations, each with a unique set of
troops and tactics:
- The Romans exhibit disciplined behavior in the battlefield, utilizing
organization and flexible formations as a means of overthrowing the enemy.
- Gauls possess the power of raw strength, more flexibility of movement on
different terrains, and are very well suited for guerrilla war and
skirmishes.
- Egyptian priests utilize a combination of religious fanaticism and science
to complement their range of military units.
Diverse Units
The Praetorians, the elite bodyguards of the Roman emperors, are just
one of the many units you can command. Each civilization has 13 different units
ranging from pikemen, centurions, and cavalry to specialized units such as the
Roman gladiators, Barbarian hunters, and Nubian archers.
Pure Strategic Combat
Minimal base building and resource management means you can focus
entirely on battlefield maneuvers.
Massive Fortress Sieges
Conquer your foes in colossal fortress sieges involving hundreds of
units. Will you attack using siege weapons, or deploy an all-out ladder assault?
Multiple Play Modes
Ambush your enemy utilizing three different gameplay modes:
- Battle for supremacy online in ruthless 8-player matches
- Master the art of war in 24 single-player missions
- Devastate your rival in freeform skirmish mode (single or multiplayer)
Devastating War Machines
Command your light infantry to construct catapults, ballistas, assault
towers and more to destroy enemy defenses.
Strategic Terrain
From high elevations supplying range and vision advantages, to dense
forests providing cover for ambushes, understanding the terrain’s strategic
value is key for victory.
Animal Reconnaissance
Dispatch your hawk or wolf scout to detect potential targets and
threats.
Tactical Formations
Harness the power of your army by employing a variety of unit
formations including the nearly impenetrable “turtle” formation.

In Praetorians, terrain is not just the landscape where the action takes place.
It is also vital to deciding where and how you can move your troops, and the way
you can attack and defend yourself. Certain troops cannot move around certain
types of terrain. Moreover, the terrain is important for deciding the line of
sight between your troops and the enemy.

Flat Terrain
Flat terrain is the most common terrain. Your troops will encounter very few
problems when traveling across flat terrain. Any unit can move across flat
terrain.
Grasslands
Grasslands are flat extensions with crops or high grass that serve as an ideal
hiding place for infantry units. If an infantry troop stops in a patch of
grassland, they will hide automatically. Nevertheless, grasslands may be set
ablaze by archers and other units causing great damage to anyone hiding in them.
So be very careful!
Forests
Dense masses of trees where some troop types cannot enter including siege
engines, lancers, and almost any kind of cavalry. Forests block visibility
between interior and exterior units, and from one side of the forest to the
other. To find out what is inside or on the other side of a forest, you will
have to go into it. The wolf scout is a particularly useful unit to gain some
visibility inside of dense forests.

Shallow Water
Although rivers may only be crossed by bridge, there are numerous swamps and
flooded fields that troops can be walk across. However, heavy infantry units and
siege engines will not be able to pass.
Slopes
and Elevations
High ground is obviously an obstacle for visibility. Troops located at the foot
of a hill will not be able to see those at the top. Likewise, troops on the
hilltop will not see those below them. Hawk scouts are especially useful for
higher ground reconnaissance from above. High ground also provides a better
visual range, which in turn means an improved attack distance for range troops.
