The NBS 5 most popular video game stories of 2008

Monday, January 5th, 2009

It’s been a great year for games and as we consider the past year, we would like to pause and reflect on the big stories that rocked NothingButSoftware. A year with upsets, surprises, and plenty of odd stuff; these are our top 5 picks for the most popular NothingButSoftware Stories of 2008.

Maple Story MMORPG

5.) Maple Story Murder
Simply because it was such an odd story it grew in popularity, and was even given a specific name for the incident “Maple Story Murder.” A story from the land of the rising sun in which a Japanese woman was jailed for deleting another persons character from the MMORPG Maple Story. As ridiculous as it sounds it is true, and it was one of the oddest stories we covered this year!

Mila Kunis on TV

4.) Mila Kunis WoW Confession
Apparently Mila Kunis is a big World of WarCraft fan, and the WoW community loves it! This story dropped during The Max Payne movie release when Mila’s popularity was already growing and this story boosted it even more, at least with wow fans.

Little Big Planet Sack Boy

3.) The Little Big Planet Recall
Most Likely the Biggest upset this year was the Little Big Planet Recall. When the release of this title was quickly approaching a sudden world wide recall was issued, because quotes from Islamic text could be heard in the video games background music. Sony decided to play it safe pushing the game back another week until the quotes could be edited out of the background music.

Street Fighter CHun-Li Image2.) New Street Fighter Chun-Li Pics
Although the New Street Fighter film seems like nothing to write home about, the buzz surrounding this film was quit popular here at NBS.  When the latest photo’s of Kristen Kreuk as Chun-Li were released we did a post on it and it became one of our most popular stories this year.

1.) F.E.A.R. 2 Weirdest Press Release Ever
F.E.A.R. 2 Alma
The oddest story we have covered this year, and most likely our most popular post in history the “F.E.A.R. 2 Press Release.” Although there is a lot of meticulous planning involved in a major press release this one takes the cake. The Entire F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin release was centered around targeting specific Video Game Contributors and sending them creepy unmarked mail, with locations to creepy destinations, to obtain creepy briefcases. Mike Fahey of Kotaku was one of these targets and he had to drive to a storage facility in the middle of the night on thanksgiving to pick up his briefcase. Inside the briefcase was nothing more then promotion material for a F.E.A.R. 2 event in New York, but all the mystery in just obtaining a briefcase of promo material was uber weird.

10 Games to Watch in 2009

Monday, December 29th, 2008

As the year is quickly coming to a close, we eagerly look forward to the new year and what is to come from the gaming industry. 2008 has been huge for games, and developers have their work cut out for them in the coming year. Here at NBS with great curiosity and anxiousness we have peeked into a couple projects and from what we have seen 2009 has potential!

If you are wondering what is to come in 2009, here is our list of games that we think deserve a look.

10. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Developer: Rocksteady Studios
Due: 2009
Batman Arkham Asylum The Joker Screen

For all of the Batman fans, who are waiting for a game to do the Dark Knight justice this one just may be it. Based on the popular graphic novel this game is a dark, gritty journey through everyone’s favorite funny farm. In Batman Arkham Asylum our caped crusader will have to face some of his most deadly foes; including Killer Croc, The Riddler, and The Joker.  In terms of game play you will not only need to use Batman’s combat skills, but also his forensic knowledge, and tech gear to progress through the game.

9. Wii Punch-Out
Developer: Nintendo
Due: 2009
Wii Punch-Out King Hippo

Based on one of the most beloved classic NES games, Punch-Out is back on the Nintendo Wii.  Mac will be returning in this title as well as his classic competitors; Glass joe, Von Kaiser, and King Hippo. The same type of game play from the classic version will be carried over in this title but with the infusion of motion control. Although the art direction seems more cartoon-like in this title rather then realistic, it still has promise.

8. Aliens: Colonial Marines
Developer: Gearbox Software
Due: 2009
Aliens Colonial Marines Facehugger

Based on the Sci-Fi classic film series Aliens Colonial Marines will pick up where Aliens 3 left off. The plot of this title is based on a search-and-rescue squad in search of Lt. Ellen Ripley, who was last seen on the Sulaco. In this FPS you will play as one of four marines who each have a different weapon. You are able to transition between the four marines, but you have to be careful which you choose because one may be better suited then the other for a specific missions. The classic Aliens will be featured in this game including facehuggers, drones, and the queen. This game is worth a look for Alien fans and FPS fans as well.

7. God of War 3
Developer: Sony Santa Monica
Due: 2009
God of War Kratos

The first God of War in full HD, we will get to see Kratos rip his enemies to shreds in full 1080p. There is not much information out on God of War 3, but from what we have surmised this third installment should be the end of Kratos quest. This title is most likely going to be released end of 2009, possibly 2010.

6. The Sims 3
Developer: EA GAmes
Due: February 2009
The Sims 3 Diamond

In The Sims 3 the scope of your control will be broader then in any previous game. You will have control over an entire neighborhood, in which you can observe the inhabitants, and pop in and out on their day to day lives. When designing your own little universe your customization options will be vast, as you can customize it as well as it’s inhabitants. When designing your characters you will be able to create their physical attributes, as well as personality traits. If you love customization options you will want to get a look at this game as it has more then any other previous title.

5. Star Wars: The Old Republic
Developer: BioWare
Due: 2009
Star Wars the Old Republic Battle

After many rumors and whispers it is confirmed that the MMO title form another LucasArts, and Bioware pairing is in the works. Star Wars The Old Republic will have the two major classes; the Jedi, and the Sith, as well as others for the Star Wars folklore.  Along with a deep storyline, character development will be dynamic as you can choose a path of light or darkness, in which every decision you make has consequence.

4. Bioshock2: Sea of Dreams
Developer: 2K Games
Due: 2009
BioShock Big Daddy

The second installment to the successful FPS,  BioShock 2: Sea of Dreams has been confirmed, and is expected in 2009.  Very little is known about this title but from what we have seen this game could quite possibly be  prequel, although this is just speculation.  Expect this title late in 2009.

3. F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin
Developer: Monolith Productions
Due: February 10, 2009
F.E.A.R. 2 Alma

In the sequel to uber scary FPS survival horror title, everyone’s favorite psychotic ghost girl (Alma) is back, and she is screwing with more minds then ever before. In F.E.A.R. 2: Project Origin you will explore the city that was annihilated by the cataclysmic explosion  of the previous game, in search of answers to the Alma mystery. The same slow-mo feature will be available in this title as you face off against more replica clones, as well as new enemies; living and dead. Get ready to jump out of your skin a second time, around February 2009.

2. Final Fantasy xIII
Developer: Square Enix
Due: 2009
Final Fantasy XII City

The latest installment in the classic RPG series, has at long last been announced. In one of the biggest surprises this year Final Fantasy XIII was confirmed for release on PS3, as well as Xbox 360 to the dismay of Sony. In FFXII you will be playing in real time, and like in previous titles you will rely on teamwork to progress, using a combination of magic, swords, and guns. Combat will be based around coordinated combo’s and also using the features of each environment to amplify inflicted damage. This title could potentially be the best yet from Final Fantasy.

1. Resident Evil 5
Developer: Capcom
Due: March 13, 2009
Resident Evil 5 Sheva and Chris

The latest Installment in the premiere survival horror series Resident Evil 5 is the most anticipated release of 2009.  Much like its predecessor RE4, this game will have the same over the shoulder view that helped make it so successful. RE5 will revolve around co-operative play, in which you can play as two characters; the Zombie Vet Chris Redfield, and new comer to the franchise Sheva Alomar. If you choose to play alone a highly advanced AI will take the place of Sheva, and If either character bites the dust the game ends. Resident Evil 5 is most likely to be the most visually stunning of any game in the series, and the most enjoyable in terms of game play. A new story, a new continent, and a new way to waste hordes of mutated products of Umbrelle Corp. Resident Evil 5 could be another extremely popular title in this franchise.

First SWTOR Documentary Footage Released

Friday, December 12th, 2008

I am personally elated to be finishing out the week with this news. The first in hopefully a long line of installments of documentary footage from BioWare has been released for Star Wars the Old Republic. The video went up today on the official SWTOR website, and it is really our first peak into what we can expect from the game.

In the Documentary the developers go over the basic plot, game play, and a couple other little nuggets of joy from their latest project. I could tell you more but I thought I would embed the video so you could just see it for yourself.  No Release date yet for this MMO title.

ENJOY!

Wrath of the Lich King Review with Video

Thursday, November 13th, 2008

The Lich King Rises
The second expansion from Blizzard, the long awaited Wrath of the Lich King has finally arrived. The Lich King has awakened and established his throne in Northrend, and if the Alliance and Horde factions to not  act maybe all of Azeroth.  Here is our review for the Wrath of the Lich King Expansion.

The Legend
Long ago the land of the ancient wars, Northrend was part of a single continent until it broke free and drifted to the north.  Separate from the rest of the world Northrend was ruled by the Nerubians who grew in power, and strength. Though the Nerubians had ruled for ages they soon were cut down by the Lich King who was given power by the demon lord Kil’Jaeden to command an army of the undead. Resurrecting an ancient race the Vrykul from beneath the ice of the Northrend the Lich King soon laid waste to the NerubiansArthas met the Lich King in battle and shattered his frozen thrown and  took his sword.  Not knowing the enchantment placed on the blade by the demon lord, Arthmas’s soul was forever merged with it making him the new Lich King. Arthas soon after disappeared into the frozen wastes falling into slumber until he was awoke by Kil’Jaeden to command the undead army and conquer the land of Azeroth.

Game Play
Unless you have lived under a rock for the past few years you know that like the Burning Crusade, Wrath of the Lich King is an expansion not a separate game.  So you are getting the same type of game play you always had with WoW, but evolved.  You will still get the standard quests such has “go kill these guys,” and “gather these mushrooms,” but they are few, over all the new quests are much more creative, and the majority of them are tied into the main plot witch was rare in the last expansion.  Also the enemy encounters are much more creative, and realistic then ever before.

The content that has been added through this expansion is vast, and should keep fans at bay for a time. The first and most notable change is the new land you are able to explore, the Northrend; which includes such territories as IceCrown, DragonBlight, and Storm Peaks. All of them beautiful in design and unique to the World of WarCraft universe. Northrend is great addition to Azeroth and is new and unique realm to explore. The new realm will have enemies above level 70, giving you the ability to level up to a cap of 80, good news fro those who have conquered the Outland. The second must notable addition is the new class the Death Knights. If you are more of Horde kinda guy the pull of these new characters will be nearly irresistible, and very enjoyable. You will get to pillage, plunder, and reek having to your little black hearts desire. The other notable pieces of content added would be the siege weapons, which are accessible during…you guest it sieges, and very from catapults, to ballistas.  More barbershops which will allow mullets now (very popular for the 80′ hair band fan’s), and the new achievement system in which your achievements will be visible for all other players to see.

Long Live the King
If you are a long time Wow addict you have probably already pre-ordered this title, but if you have recently  gotten out of your WoW rut, this expansion is more then adequate to push you right back into a new one. Blizzard has evolved their universe, and designed a new realm of game play that is sure to keep the dedicated fans satisfied, and bring wayward ones back. With new content, evolved game play, and a vast new realm of adventure to explore Wrath of the Lich king is sure to satisfy your WoW fixation.  We give the Wrath of the Lich King an A+ rating.

Japanese Woman Jailed For…Virtual Murder?

Thursday, October 23rd, 2008

A 43 year old Japanese woman was jailed today for murdering her husband…her on-line husband.

MapleStory OnlineWhen the 43 year old music teacher realized her on-line husband had divorced her in the MMORPG MapleStory, she then proceeded to login under his name and password and delete his character. When the man had realized his on-line character had been deleted he proceeded to call the police. The virtual assassin was apprehended by the authorities and jailed for illegally accessing a computer, and manipulating on-line data. The perpetrator could be facing a five year prison sentence or a fine of up to $5,000.

The Woman was quoted as saying ” I was suddenly divorced, without a word of warning. That made me so angry.”

I personally think she jumped the gun she could have suggested on-line counseling, or maybe an on-line trip for them to rekindle their romance. It’s a shame that so many on-line marriages are failing now.

Star Wars MMO Announced

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Yesterday at a San Francisco press conference, LucasArts, and BioWare announced their MMORPG title Star Wars:The Old Republic, currently in development. After a poor job of keeping the game secret it has finally been revealed to the delight of millions of fans. The Old Republic, BioWare’s first MMORPG title is based on their previous creation for Xbox Knights of the Old Republic.

As stated before The Old Republic will be based on BioWare’s previous title Knights of the Old Republic; in which the plot takes place thousands of years before Darth Vader. The Old Republic is at war with the Sith Empire; and it has divided the galaxy. Players will be able to choose whether to fight as the Sith, or the Jedi, and defining their path through light or darkness. No matter what side of the war you choose there are levels, and sub levels within the chain of command each consists of its own story.

For every decision you make within the game there is a consequence and your path will be altered by it as well as the path of others. Your character will be able to team up with other characters as well; in which your decisions will be able to affect them as well as theirs affect you.

“For a long time, we’ve long wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in an experience together” said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts.  “We knew that the developer was capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare.”

So at long last the Star Wars and MMO hounds finally have confirmation that this new title is indeed a MMORPG.

Mila Kunis and her WoW Confession

Tuesday, October 21st, 2008

Mila Kunis on Talk ShowThe actress known for her roles in Family Guy, and That 70’s Show; and for her more recent role in the new Max Payne movie.  Mila Kunis is an actress that continues to grow in popularity; for her comedic talents, looks, and magnetic personality.  There is a lot to like, and apparently she is growing in popularity with gamers, and geeks as well, due to the confession of her love of World of WarCraft.

In a recent interview with Complex Magazine in which they discussed her television roles,  and new movie roles; Mila confessed she was fan of W.O.W. Apparently her and boyfriend Macaulay Culkin both play WarCraft. Though she couldn’t reveal her character (for obvious safety reasons) she did say she was a Mage, and that she joined guilds. She wasn’t modest about her WarCraft skills as she was quoted “I’m really good.”

Despite her interview at Comic Con, in which she accidentally stated that the X-Men films were based on video games, instead of a series of comic books, fans have been forgiving. After this new WarCraft revelation maybe the geek cultural fringe will be more willing to welcome her as one of their own. I’m sure W.O.W.
fans will.

Although the new patch (also known as patch 3.o.2) will be adding some new things, it will also be removing some old things as well. One of them rogue poison making, O.M.G.  As heart broken as fans of poison making may be they will be forced to buy all their poisons instead of creating them.
