Fallout 3 Image
Fallout 3, the action RPG from Bethesda Softworks, which includes first person and third person perspective game play was released on October 28th, to the delight of droves of fans. All seemed right with the post apocalyptic, ash covered world. That is until complaints started popping up in the Bethesda PS3 forums. Soon after the complaints starting poring into the 360, and PC forums as well.  What started as PS3 issue, has broadened to all other platforms that the game has been released for.

The issues that the consoles are having range from freezing, lagging, and crashing. Gamers have reported  that the game has frozen, and lagged at various points in game play, and even crashed on occasion. The PC version is having the most complications of the three platforms when originally it had little to none. The issue began after a patch was downloaded and since then PC gamers have been complaining of the game completely locking up.

Bethesda has had this issue before when they had released Oblivian, and they eventually were able to remedy the issue, but the fact that that they could not use a little hindsight to prepare for this must be discouraging to fans. The amount of complications is staggering, and they continue to grow.

Now not to play devils advocate, but Bethesda has been working to try and remedy the issues, and they have post some troubleshooting exercises within their forum to help fans out. Hopefully these issue, although they bee many will be resolved soon. Here are the PS3, 360, and PC troubleshooting tips.

Here is our idea on how Bethesda can resolve this issue

Gears of War 2 Has Arrived

Gears of War 2 of Flame Thrower
The Second Installment in the Gears of War series from Epic Games hits the shelves today.  Gears of War 2 the third person action shooter exclusively for Xbox 360, and is quite possibly the most anticipated game release this year.

The plot line of Gears 2 begins six months after the events of the first installment.  You see the return of the games protagonist Marcus Fenix, as well as the COG Delta Squad. The Locust (subterranean creatures) have returned and regrouped after their defeat. They have created sink holes massive enough to swallow entire cities, this has tipped the scale of the war in the Locusts favor. Your goal as well as the Delta Squad’s and all COG forces is to defend the last human city from sinking underground.

It seems that Gears of War 2 carries the same type of game play that fans loved from the original title, and improves on its shortcomings. The single player mode is longer, it is said to be 10-12 hours long.  The environments are much larger, and there are greater numbers of enemies you can battle. You have a new arsenal of weapons to choose from including the extra crispy flame thrower.  Gears 2 continues the same type of trench warfare , but with with some new added feature, such as the unbelievably satisfying ability to use Locust enemies as a shield to deflect bullets.

Possibly the greatest strength of Gears 2 is it’s Multiplayer modes. The Online Multiplayer has a great deal of modes of play to choose from, including king of the hill, and the enjoyable horde, in which you and up to five players must battle large number’s of enemies attacking you in waves. It includes 10 maps available for play as well as 5 more available for download.

The general opinion is that Gears 2 is an excellent continuation in the Gears of War series. It improves on the shortcomings of the first title, and expands on the type of game play that fans of the series love. Overall Gears 2 is a great shooter. So ready your chainsaws and load your guns it’s here Today!

Resistance 2 Has Landed

Resistance 2 Screens
The highly anticipated Sci-Fi first person shooter Resistance 2, has finally been released. Exclusively a PS3 title, and developed by Insomniac Resistance 2 continues the plot of the Resistance Fall of Man in which we see the return of the Chimera who have launched a campaign to conquer the United States. Nathan Hale the games protagonist has also returned and has joined a special task force known as The Sentinels,  a group of individuals who are able to resists the Chimeran virus. Hale fights along side the sentinels to try and destroy the Chimeran race and liberate the US from their threat.

The new game includes new Chimeran enemies, the most notable, and most popular, the 300ft tall leviathan. The game has three basic modes of play campaign, cooperative, and competitive and each is said to consist of enjoyable game play.  Within the campaign mode you are able to battle along side The Sentinels at multiple locations all on American soil. Within the competitive mode of the game you are able to battle up 60 individuals online within a single match.

From what we have heard the game play is great, and the plot is a good continuation of the first game. The only negative aspects of the game would be the graphics, which are not bad by any means, but are not quite the quality as other big titles like Gears of War2. Despite that small draw back it seems Resistance 2 is destined to be one of the great first person shooters, and will stand along side such great titles as Call of Duty, and Halo.

If you are a fan of the Sci-Fi game genre, or a fan of the first person shooter you will want to pick this game up. The general buzz is that it lives up to the original title.

Tomb Raider - Underworld…Looking Better Then Ever

Tomb Raider Underworld

Lara Croft embarks on a new adventure in the 8th installment in the grave robbing saga, Tomb Raider Underworld.  This is the third game in the series that Crystal Dynamics has developed, and the plot of the new game will continue where Tomb Raider Legend left off.

The Demo which was released yesterday on Xbox Live, features the new environments, and game play that fans of the third person action shooter series can finally get a glimpse of.  In Tomb Raider Underworld the environments are totally interactive, and hold memory.  If Lara bends a shrubbery or breaks a tree branch it remains that way. The environments are meticulous in their design, and the development of Lara Croft has been just as detailed.  Croft is said to have over 2,000 animations, and contextual movements, and for the first time in Tomb Raider history she has been motion captured, and the developers used Olympic gymnasts to sculpt her movements.

In terms of game play the demo features the new combat system in which Croft will be capable of shooting at two targets at once, and be able to melee enemies by kicking or vaulting off of them.  The developers have also tweaked the platforming in the new game, in which the camera angels are more forgiving, and Croft will be capable of shooting at enemies while traversing planks, or hanging from ledges.

So load your guns and ready your daisy dukes because Tomb Raider Underworld will be in stores Nov. 21st. It will be released for PC, PS3, PS2, Nintendo Wii, DS, and Xbox 360.

Star Wars MMO Announced

Wednesday, October 22nd, 2008

Yesterday at a San Francisco press conference, LucasArts, and BioWare announced their MMORPG title Star Wars:The Old Republic, currently in development. After a poor job of keeping the game secret it has finally been revealed to the delight of millions of fans. The Old Republic, BioWare’s first MMORPG title is based on their previous creation for Xbox Knights of the Old Republic.

As stated before The Old Republic will be based on BioWare’s previous title Knights of the Old Republic; in which the plot takes place thousands of years before Darth Vader. The Old Republic is at war with the Sith Empire; and it has divided the galaxy. Players will be able to choose whether to fight as the Sith, or the Jedi, and defining their path through light or darkness. No matter what side of the war you choose there are levels, and sub levels within the chain of command each consists of its own story.

For every decision you make within the game there is a consequence and your path will be altered by it as well as the path of others. Your character will be able to team up with other characters as well; in which your decisions will be able to affect them as well as theirs affect you.

“For a long time, we’ve long wanted to return to the franchise in a grand way, and felt that the best setting for it was an online world that would allow millions of people to participate in an experience together” said Darrell Rodriguez, President of LucasArts.  “We knew that the developer was capable of working with us to deliver an engrossing story with a fully-realized online world was BioWare.”

So at long last the Star Wars and MMO hounds finally have confirmation that this new title is indeed a MMORPG.

Obama Trying To Reach Gamers… Using Video Games! Now That’s Change We Can Believe In!

Wednesday, October 15th, 2008

People who have been ignoring their civic duty and have been spending more time gaming than being involved in the shaping the future of our country, your days are numbered.

Barack Obama's Campaign ad in Burnouut Paradise from EALast week while gamers were pealing out in Burnout Paradise, a new title released by EA; they noticed when passing one of those hairpin turns an Obama campaign billboard rising in the distance. It has recently been confirmed that Barack Obama is indeed the first Presidential Candidate to purchase ad space inside a video game. according to the Associated Press Obama has paid for add space in 9 EA titles, including Madden 09, and Burnout Paradise.

“I can confirm that the Obama campaign has paid for in-game advertising in Burnout” Holly Rockwood, the director of corporate communications at Electronic Arts stated “like most television, radio, and print outlets, we accept advertising from credible political candidates.” She also went on to say “Like political spots on the television networks, these ads do not reflect the political policies of EA or the opinions of its development teams.”

The idea of advertising within video games is a relatively new concept and was less than a consideration for candidates 18 months ago.  Although some may say Obama is sending mixed messages through these ads; seeing how he had stated earlier that parents should cut back on their children’s game time, maybe it is just his less than subtle way of motivating gamers to get involved.

Max Payne Explodes onto the screen Oct. 17th

Thursday, October 9th, 2008

As the gaming industry continues to grow we see more and more of our favorite game titles adapted to screen. Some have had moderate success; the Final Fantasy, and Resident Evil films, and then others not so much.  One of the upcoming films that fans are hopeful about is Max Payne; which was a title released by Rockstar in 2001, and was wildly popular at the time for its game play due to its slow motion capabilities.

The film will be hitting theaters October 17th , and its plot is based on that of the game.  Max, being played by Mark Wahlberg, is an inner city cop whose family and partner are brutally murdered. In the pursuit of retribution for these disturbing crimes, Max plunges into the depths of a dark, gritty underworld; in which he discovers enemies beyond the mortal realm and a betrayal beyond imagination.

The film was Directed by John Moore who is best known for Behind Enemy Lines, his Directorial debut.  The cast consists of Mark Wahlberg (The Departed, The Italian Job) as Payne, Mila Kunis (That 70’s show) as supporting actress, and Chris Ludacris Bridges (Crash) as supporting Actor. Although Mark Wahlberg has refused to play the game, he says it is nothing personal it is only because he doesn’t want to indulge his addictive nature; and since he has claimed that playing Max Payne is his favorite role yet, fans of the game may let it slide.

Mark who is no stranger to the action film genre was praised for his supporting role in The Departed which also got him an Oscar nod. Although Mark has an almost iconic role to live up to, fans seem elated with him playing Payne, and more than satisfied with the supporting role of the beautiful Mila Kunis.

The trailer has fans starving for all the gritty bullet riddled goodness that is Max Payne the movie. I guess for now we will have to rely on the trailer to satisfy our hunger for mayhem.

Here is the official Max Payne trailer.

Below is an interview with the cast at Comic-Con; on the Max Payne film, the game, and the fans.

Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Review for PC

Thursday, September 25th, 2008

From side scrolling to 3D

Originally Prince of Persia was developed in 1989 as an MS-DOS side scrolling adventure, the series was revitalized in 2003 with the release of the Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. As a continuation of the series the release moved the game into the 3D realm and firmly established the series as one of the greatest in the action adventure genre. Originally released for Play Station 2, the game was later released for other consoles, and also for PC. Though the PC version has a few minor drawbacks it is the easy choice for die hard PC gamers and a matter of personal preference for console junkies.

And then there was sand…

At the beginning of our story we find our hero, the Prince of Persia on a journey through India with his father King Shahraman (say that three times fast), on their way to Azad with a small battalion of men. During their journey they come across the palace of the great Maharaja of India, and with the aid and safe passage of the Maharaja’s back stabbing Vizier they storm the palace. When the siege is complete, the spoils, which include the Maharaja’s daughter (Farah), an hourglass, and the dagger of time; are all collected and divided amongst the victors. Upon returning to Azad the Prince is tricked into placing the dagger into the hourglass smashing it and releasing the sands of time. When the sand is released it baths the palace of Azad, and turns all its inhabitants into undead sand creatures; leaving only the Prince, the evil Vizier, and Farah immune from its curse. The prince soon after forms an alliance with Farah and must track down the evil vizier to collect the sands of time, and use his dagger to fend of the deformed sand creatures.

Game play

The Game consists manly of three types of game play; combat, puzzles, and acrobatics; all of which are extremely enjoyable. The Prince is light and very agile giving him the ability to run along walls to avoid traps, and dodge enemies quite easily. You not only are dependent on the prince’s physical strength and agility you must also rely on the Prince’s dagger to progress through the game. The dagger gives you the ability to rewind time; so if you fall in combat or are captured in a trap you can rewind ten seconds in time and undo the mishap. Not only do you need the dagger to push back the icy grip of death; it is also the only defense against the sand creatures; since they are immune to mortal weapons. The game is completely linear though you are trapped within the cursed palace and can only progress from room to room through a pre-determined path.

PC or Console - Apples or Oranges

For console gamers the first and major draw back to the PC version of Prince of Persia is that it is not compatible with a game pad, but the mouse and keyboard controls are easily adaptable. The other draw back is the PC version did not include any of the bonus materials the console versions had; which for any die-hard P.O.P. fan is a definite drawback. The good news is the PC version has the smoothest looking graphics; the atmospheres are smooth, and natural; not blocky. If you can get over the fact that the Pc version is not game pad compatible it is the easy choice when it comes to graphics.
